毎週木曜はESSの日！　今日は、オリーブの枝を使ってクリスマスリースを作りました。「オリーブの島」を目指して天草じゅうに植えられているオリーブですが、今日使ったのはESSの顧問の先生の家の庭からやってきたものです。今日は11月にやってきたStellaさんも参加して、ニュージーランド、アメリカ、オーストラリア、日本の４カ国のみんなで集まっての活動となりました。

　クリスマスのリースを作るのはほとんどが初めての経験。最初はオリーブの枝を曲げてリースの形を整えるのに苦労していましたが、みんなだんだんと慣れてきて、色とりどりの飾り付けをして、それぞれ個性豊かな素敵なリースができました。クリスマスソングを聞きながら、いろんな国のクリスマスの過ごし方について話したり、各家庭のクリスマスのデコレーション（なんと、家にツリーがある家が約半数ありました）について話したり。「天草では冬に雪は積もるの？」や、「日本ではクリスマスにケンタッキーを食べるって本当？」という質問も出ていました（みなさんの家はどうですか？）。

　ESSでは、英会話だけではなく各国の文化や歴史を学ぶ様々な活動をしています。少人数でアットホームな雰囲気で英語が学べる絶好の環境です。英語が得意でなくても、少々シャイでも、短時間の参加でも大歓迎！　木曜の16時半、４階のESS部室でお待ちしています！

    In ESS today, we made Christmas wreaths using olive branches. Olives are planted all over Amakusa aiming for an "Olive Island," but the ones we used today came from the ESS teacher’s house. Stella, who came to Japan as an exchange student in November, and some new students joined us today.  We found we had participants from four different countries (New Zealand, the U.S., Australia, and Japan)!

　It’s the first time for most of us to make Christmas wreaths. At first, we had a hard time bending olive branches to form the wreath shape, but everyone gradually got used to it and created beautiful wreaths with colorful decorations, each with its own unique style. While listening to Christmas songs, we talked about how Christmas is spent in various countries, and talked about each family's Christmas decorations (to our surprise, about half of the families had a tree at home). We asked questions like, "Does it snow in Amakusa in winter?" and "Is it true that people eat KFC on Christmas in Japan?”  

　ESS offers not only English conversation classes but also various activities to learn about the culture and history of each country. It is a great environment to learn English in a small group and in a friendly atmosphere. Even if you are not good at English, a little shy, or only join for a short time, you are all welcome!　We are waiting for you on Thursdays at 16:30 in the ESS club room on the 4th floor!
