Make-A-Wreath Workshop

In ESS today, we made Christmas wreaths using olive branches. Olives are planted all over Amakusa aiming for an "Olive Island," but the ones we used today came from the ESS teacher’s house. Stella, who came to Japan as an exchange student in November, and some new students joined us today.  We found we had participants from four different countries (New Zealand, the U.S., Australia, and Japan)!

It’s the first time for most of us to make Christmas wreaths. At first, we had a hard time bending olive branches to form the wreath shape, but everyone gradually got used to it and created beautiful wreaths with colorful decorations, each with its own unique style. While listening to Christmas songs, we talked about how Christmas is spent in various countries, and talked about each family's Christmas decorations (to our surprise, about half of the families had a tree at home). We asked questions like, "Does it snow in Amakusa in winter?" and "Is it true that people eat KFC on Christmas in Japan?”

ESS offers not only English conversation classes but also various activities to learn about the culture and history of each country. It is a great environment to learn English in a small group and in a friendly atmosphere. Even if you are not good at English, a little shy, or only join for a short time, you are all welcome! We are waiting for you on Thursdays at 16:30 in the ESS club room on the 4th floor!

Making Takoyaki in English! /

As a congratulations to students' efforts during exam week, we all gathered in the cooking room for our very first ESS takoyaki party! It was Jennifer’s first time ever making takoyaki, so students explained to her the method in English. As for me, since I am allergic to octopus, we all brought many different ingredients to put in the takoyaki, from traditional octopus, to cheese and even chocolate and gummies!

We had a total of 15 students come through, and the environment was full of laughs and fun! Some students even played a kind of Russian Roulette around a hidden, gummy takoyaki.  And between the 3 takoyaki machines going at once, it was a wonderful feast!

All in all, it was a great opportunity for students to practice English, Jennifer to learn about Japanese culture, and for me to finally try a chocoyaki (chocolate filled takoyaki). But let's ask Jennifer Sensei what she thinks!

I had a lot of fun learning from the students and trying some interesting flavour combinations. The students made gummy takoyaki. While I was not brave enough to try it, the students had a lot of laughs around it. I really enjoyed the chocolate takoyaki and the cheese takoyaki the most. I had so much fun making it that I went home and taught my husband. - Jeniffer

If you are reading this message, that means the English club was a success! We members of the club gathered, and, while exploring a cookbook from New Zealand, Jennifer Sensei introduced us to ‘Hokey Pokey’, a New Zealands sweet! Upon discovering this sweet, students seemed to light up with excitement! As such, we decided on the activity for our next week: Cooking!

After that, we also played a board game called “Code Names”. In this game, there are two roles, so called ‘Spymasters’ and ‘Field Operatives’. Spymasters must give hints in the form of an English word, and a number. Using this hint, Field Operatives must find as many words associated with the hint on the game field as possible, without picking up any civilians or finding the assassin! The pressure was on, and students did exceptionally well, and had a much more robust English vocabulary than I thought!

I am happy to say, it was another successful ESS meeting!

このゲームでは、Spymaster(スパイマスター)とField Operatives(現場諜報員)という2つの役割のどちらかを与えられます。

ESS Students learning Debate

That the Japanese government should legalize gestational surrogacy.”(日本政府は、代理出産を合法化すべきである)。

Today five ESS students participated in the Prefectural English Debate online lecture.  There were 14 schools participating, and they started from the very beginning - studying about the flow, writing effective constructive speech, and learning how to attack the opponent.  It was a difficult, but productive three hours.

The topic given today was that “the Japanese government should legalize gestational surrogacy.”  It is the same topic for the Prefectural Debate Contest in October.  It is such a difficult theme and especially the negative side had difficulty attacking.  While the affirmative side insisted, “it would enable people in need to have babies at a lower cost,” the negative side tried to say, “even if they could have gestational surrogacy in Japan, it still costs a lot because the medical cost in Japan is high.”  Still, they felt it’s difficult to prove that.

Through their first English debate, students learned not only about debate techniques but also about the situation and problems of gestational surrogacy.  Debate is never easy, but we’re sure this experience will be useful in the near future.
