12月といえばクリスマス！　今日のASでは、ずっと欲しかったおもちゃ、ならぬ実験道具を手に入れてウキウキしている班がたくさんありました。汽水域班は塩分濃度計をついにゲット！　これで汽水域がはっきり分かりますね。早速ウェーダーを身につけていつもの川へレッツゴー！　ヘドロを発見してはしゃぐJK。これも青春ですね。

　「走る」班が手に入れたのは「AI骨格検出システム」。こちらはかなり本格的です。動画の３D解析ができるツールらしく、英文の説明書もお手のもの！　早速パソコンにつないで、運動場で走ったときの体の動きを解析していました。実に楽しそうにしています！　その頃、「音」班もやっとベニア板（T2ラワン合板というらしいです。さて、ラワンとは？）を手に入れ、どれくらい防音できるかを調べるための小さな「部屋」づくりに勤しんでいます。やっと「インスタ映え」する写真が撮れました！！

　23日のKSHでは、各班ポスター発表を行うことになっていますが、班によっては１人での発表となる班も...　久しぶりにお越しいただいた崇城大学の田丸先生には、「ポスターの分かりづらいところを指摘し合い、より分かりやすいポスターで伝わる発表を目指す」ようご助言をいただきました。（また、継続している質疑応答練習についてもお褒めいただきました。ありがとうございます！）

　今日で２学期のASⅡは終わりです。来週は修学旅行、その次は修学旅行の代休、そしてあっという間に終業式がやってきます。23日の発表会では、大人数の中で初めて会う人にも研究内容を伝えられるでしょうか。また、それが終わると28日のサイエンスアカデミー（小中学校の生徒にサイエンスの楽しさを伝えます）。更に更に、１月の研修では全班英語でのプレゼンが予定されています。忙しい冬になりそうですね。みんながんばって！

     It’s December - that means Christmas is coming VERY soon!　Today there were many groups who were excited to get a toy from Santa. Well, actually what they got were experimental tools that they had long wanted. The group “Brackish water” finally got a salinity meter they dreamed of! Wearing waders, they went to the river excitedly.

　The group "Running" got the "AI Skeleton Detection System.” It seems to be a tool that can perform 3D analysis of videos. The students set it up and started analyzing their body movements they had shot. They really seemed to be enjoying themselves!

　Meanwhile, the"Sound" group finally got their hands on a veneer board (called T2 Lauan Plywood. What is “Lauan” by the way?)  They were working on building a small "room" to see how well it can be soundproofed. While the boys were quietly making posters for their presentations on the computer, the girls were assembling the boards with hammers in their hands. Finally, we could take some "instagrammable" photos of this group!

　At the KSH presentation on the 23rd, each group will have a poster presentation.  Dr. Tamaru of Sojo University came to today’s classes and gave some advice on making good and easy-to-understand posters. (He also complimented us on our ongoing Q&A practice. Thank you!)

　Today is the last ASII in this term. We will have a closing ceremony in about two weeks, but they have presentations and “Science Academy (Science Day with Elementary and Junior High Students)” during the winter holiday. It is going to be a busy winter. Good luck everyone!

　再来週の本評価を控えた２年生、今日のATⅠでは実験やアンケートの結果を分析している班が多かったようです。その中で困っていた ある班を発見しました。天草特産のみかんを活かした特産品を開発すべく、先日試作品の調理を行ったものの、本評価で示せる数値データがありません。調理の際、数値を取らなかったのか尋ねてみたところ、「バタバタして記録を取っていません」とのこと...。

　仮説の検証を常に頭において研究を進めていくことは、簡単そうで実は結構難しいのだと感じます。仮説の検証につながる信頼できるデータを確実にとっていくには、しっかりとグループ内でのディスカッションを行い、情報を共有することが必要です。その上で、班員でやるべきことを分担して計画的かつ論理的に研究を進めていかねばなりません。さて、各班、本評価までに結果を出せるのでしょうか。みんな頑張って！

　今日は久しぶりに熊本大学と天草市役所から先生方が来られ、地域と関わる研究をしている各班に研究の助言をいただきました。また、次の実験に向けて器具を準備している班もありました（オリーブかすから化粧水に使うスクワランという成分を抽出するそうです）。ディスカッションや活動を重ね、それぞれの研究が少しずつ、少しずつ進んでいます。

　　In ATⅠ today, students are preparing for their evaluation coming in two weeks. We had some advisors from Kumamoto University and Amakusa City come and give advice. Meanwhile, a group was preparing equipment for their next experiment (they are trying to extract a component called squalane from olive pomace). Many others are analyzing the results of their experiments and surveys. 

　　There we found one group in trouble. They have been developing a new product utilizing locally grown oranges, and they cooked some pies the other day.  They enjoyed their cooking and it looked like a success.  But now they have a problem - no numerical data to show in the evaluation. They say they were too busy to keep a record when cooking...

　　It looks like students sometimes forget the fact that they must verify the hypotheses. It is essential to keep discussing in groups and to share the same goal.  No matter what research they do, every single group needs to obtain reliable data to verify the hypothesis.  Well, there should be a way.  Never give up! Gambatte!!

本日のATⅡでは、他の班が作成した提言書を評価表を用いて評価しました。

どんな点が良く書けていて、どんな点が分かりにくかったのかを指摘し合います。

この相互評価を経て、次回はリライトを行い完成となります。完成度を高めるために最後まで頑張っています。

今月末に行われる九州大会に出場が決まった科学部化石班が調査を行いました。

前回の調査よりも範囲を広げ、さらにデータを増やしました。

新たな調査結果も含めて、8500万年前の古環境を明らかにしていきたいと思います。

　本日のASでは、冒頭にSSH主任の宮﨑先生より今後のスケジュールについて話がありました。12月には二つの外部発表会が予定されており、冬休みにはサイエンスアカデミー（小中学生対象の科学教室）、1月には海外研修代替研修が予定されています（英語の発表あり）。冬の予定もぎっしりですね！

　さて、明日から12月。外もずいぶん寒くなってきました。久々に川に入ってヘドロを採取しようとした「汽水域」班... 川の水の冷たいこと！　そして、そんな時に限って目的のものがなかなか手に入りません... 川底が堅かったり、石ばかりだったり... 手を真っ赤にしながらも、あきらめずに最後の最後まで川で格闘する二人でした。

　質疑応答も頑張っています。４週目を迎え、各班２回ずつ質問または説明＆応答を経験したことになります。少しずつ慣れてきたかな？　次回からは英語も使いつつこの活動を行おうと（ひそかに）計画しています。簡単なことではありませんが、きっとみんなならできるはず！　期待しています。

    At the beginning of today’s ASⅡ, Mr. Miyazaki told his students about the upcoming schedule: two external presentations are scheduled for December, the “Science Academy” (science classes for elementary and junior high school students) is scheduled for winter break.  And in January, a study tour is scheduled (where students have presentations in English). What a busy winter you all have!

　Time flies, and it’s already December tomorrow. The group "Brackish Water" went outside in the cold  to collect sludge... The water in the river was really really cold!　To make matters worse, they had a very hard time getting what they wanted - the bottom of the river was hard, or there were only stones... The two were red handed, but never gave up, and struggled in the river until the very end of the classes.

　They are also doing their best in the Q&A sessions. Now in the fourth week since we started this activity, each group has had two turns asking questions or explaining and answering questions. It looks like many of them are getting used to it little by little. Hopefully we will be doing this activity using English soon. We know it will not be so easy, but we are sure everyone will be able to do it!  Keep on doing!

　今日はドライフルーツ班、初めての実験！　実験といっても液体を混ぜて気体を発生させる...などというものではなく、５種類のお茶を飲んでもらい、それぞれの味やおいしさについてアンケートをとるというものです。

　昨日放課後にせっせと作った「甘いお茶」５種類... 何のお茶かは知らせず飲んでもらい、アンケートを取りました。２年生の生徒約20名が昼休みの時間に被験者として協力してくれました。

　「何これ！？」「意外といける！」「まずっ！」「おかわり！」と様々な感想が聞かれます。なんともにぎやかで楽しい実験となりました。ちなみに、５種類のお茶は緑茶、ほうじ茶、抹茶、麦茶、ウーロン茶の５種類に砂糖を入れたものです。さて、どのお茶がいちばん「アリ」の評価となるのでしょうか？

　放課後には先生方にも協力をお願いする予定です。ぜひぜひ、宜しくお願いします！ 

　　Today we had our very first experiment! We had the students drink five kinds of tea and take a survey on the taste and deliciousness of each tea.  About 20 students in the second grade cooperated with us during their lunch break.

　”What is this?” “It tastes surprisingly good!” “Yuck!” “Can I have another sip?" It was a very lively and enjoyable experiment. Between you and us, the five teas were green tea, roasted green tea, matcha, barley tea, and oolong tea, with sugar added. Which one do you think will be the most popular?　

　We will also ask some teachers to help us as test subjects after school. We cannot wait to see the result of this interesting experiment!

これは、10代の研究マインドを応援する育成型プロジェクトで、全3回の発表で研究をブラッシュアップしていきます。

本日はセカンドラウンドが行われ、発表を行いました。

研究成果が上手く出ていないこともあり、課題の残る発表となりました。

来年3月のファイナルラウンドに向けて、研究を進めていきたいと思います。

２日続けてこんにちは！　ドライフルーツ班です。

　写真を見てください！　これは今日収穫したばかりのオリーブです。さて、突然ですが、ここで問題です。さて、このオリーブの入手先はどこでしょう？

　　１　オリーブ園の通信販売

　　２　天草の青果市場

　　３　小学校の運動場

　正解は...　３！　天草高校のお隣（徒歩３分です）にある本渡南小学校の運動場にオリーブが実っているという情報をいただき、収穫におじゃましました。

　丁度お昼休みだった南小。運動場でたわわに実った黒い実を収穫していると、黄色い帽子をかぶった元気のいい女の子たちが「おねーちゃん、何してるの？」と元気よく声をかけてくれました。それからどんどん小学生が増え...　最終的には高校生２人と小学生10人ほどでわいわい言いながら楽しく収穫することになりました。巨峰みたいに大きくてとっても立派なオリーブがたくさん収穫できました！

　さて、収穫したオリーブはどうなったかというと... 　元々は「オリーブのはちみつ漬け」を作るために分けていただいたのですが（うまくいけば最短２週間で渋が抜け始めるとのこと）、他にも、砂糖や塩で漬け込む方法も試してみようと思います。うまくいきますように！　

   収穫に協力してくれた元気なちびっこたち、快く収穫を許可していただいた本渡南小学校の福山教頭先生、本当にありがとうございました。研究活動、がんばります！

Hello again from the “dried fruit group!”

　Please take a look at the picture!　These are olives we got today, which were just harvested. Now, here is a sudden question. Where did you get these olives?

　　1 Mail order from olive orchards

　　2 Fruit and vegetable market in Amakusa

　　3. Elementary school playgrounds

　The correct answer is... 3!　We were informed that olives were growing on the playground of Hondo Minami Elementary School, located next to Amakusa High School (a 3-minute walk), so we went there to harvest them.

　It was just lunch time at Minami Elementary School. While I was picking the black olives in the playground, a group of cheerful girls in yellow hats called out to me cheerfully, "What are you doing, girl? They called out to me cheerfully, "What are you doing? Then more and more elementary school students joined us...　In the end, there were two high school students and about 10 elementary school students, and we had a lot of fun harvesting the fruit. We were able to harvest a lot of olives that were big and very fine, like grape grapes!

　Now, what happened to the olives we harvested? 　Originally, we were given them to share to make "olives in honey" (hopefully the astringency will start to come off in as little as 2 weeks), but we are going to try other ways to pickle them with salt and 00. I hope it will work!　

   Thank you very much to the energetic little ones who helped us harvest, and to Mr. Fukuyama, the vice principal of Minami Elementary School, who graciously allowed us to harvest. We will do our best in our research activities!

はじめまして！ドライフルーツ班です。

　私たち２名は、12月のSSH台湾研修でドライフルーツを使った食品ロス削減について発表をする予定になっています。私たちは所属学年は違うのですが、元々AS（１年）とAT（２年）で食品ロスの研究を計画しており、今回、共同で研究することになりました。現在は、地元の果物を活用したフレーバーティーの試作に向けて、先行研究を調べたり、お茶に関する実験を計画したりしているところです。

　今日はランチの時間を活用して、手作りのドライフルーツ（＆ベジタブル）を試食しました。使ったのは、天草産の温州みかん、レモン、ゆず、金柑、それにトマト。オーブンからは、柑橘系のいい香りがしてきます！120℃で60分ほど乾燥させたところで、１つずつ試食してみました。

　まずは、ゆず...めちゃくちゃすっぱいです！　同じように乾燥させているのになぜか、ゆずだけすぐ茶色に焦げているのはなぜでしょう...。当たり前ですが、レモンもすっぱいです（予想通り）。みかんは一番パリッと綺麗にでき、見た目もかなりの自信作といえそうです！　皮ごとパリッと食べられます。意外と美味しかったのが、トマト！　今回、ドライトマトを食べたのは初めてですが、生でそのまま食べるより甘みが増していて、可能性を感じます。最後に金柑...す、すっぱい！ゆずよりはすっぱくないものの、生の金柑よりすっぱいと感じます。甘みが凝縮される果物と、そうでないものがあるのは面白いですね。　

　来週には、生徒のみなさんと先生方に「ある飲み物」を試飲していただく予定です。どうか御協力をお願いします！

 
Nice to meet you! We are a research group named “Dried Fruit.”

　We are planning to make a presentation on food loss reduction using dried fruits at the SSH Taiwan study tour in December. Although we are in different grades, we both thought of the research on food loss in AS (1st year) and AT (2nd year) class. Now we have decided to collaborate on this project - currently in the process of researching previous studies and planning experiments related to tea. We are trying to create a “new” flavored tea utilizing local fruits.

　During lunch today, we tasted samples of homemade dried fruits (& veggies). We used some Amakusa-grown mandarins, lemons, yuzu, kumquat, and tomatoes. when cooking, the sweet smell of the fruits and vegetables come out from the oven! After drying at 120°C for 60 minutes, we tasted them one by one.

　First, the yuzu... It is very sour! Somehow the yuzu is the only fruit browning quickly even though they are dried in the same way as other fruits. Lemons are also sour as expected. The mandarin oranges are the crispiest and most beautiful.  We can say that we are quite confident of their appearance - you can even enjoy their crispy peel! Surprisingly tasty were the tomatoes! This is the first time we've had dried tomatoes, but they are sweeter than fresh, and we can see their potential in cooking. Finally, kumquat... Soooo sour! It is not as sour as yuzu, but we feel it is more sour than fresh kumquat. It is interesting that some fruits have concentrated sweetness while some do not.　

　We plan to have our classmates and teachers sample our “special drink” next week. Thank you for your cooperation in advance!
