科学部ホタル班1年生の3名が全国高校生フォーラムに参加しました。

このフォーラムは毎年実施されており、全国の高校生が英語では研究発表を行います。

今年は久しぶりに東京渋谷の国立オリンピック記念青少年総合センターにて対面形式での実施となりました。

フォーラムは午前中に「多様性」について英語でディスカッションし、午後には研究発表を英語で行いました。

1年生3名は不慣れな英語による発表でしたが、身振りや手ぶりも活用し、相手に伝えていました。

これは本人たちの努力が一番大きいのですが、一部に先輩たちが海外発表で学んだことも生かされています。

このように科学部は先輩たちの学びを生かして、後輩が深化させていくことを続けています。

今後の科学部にもご期待ください。

本日のATⅡでは、他班からの評価をうけてリライトを行いました。

これで、天草市への提言書が完成しました。

ATⅡでは、文系や理系を問わず、地域課題解決に向けた課題研究に取り組んできました。

地域をあらゆる視点から考え、課題の解決策を模索していこうとする姿勢は、高校卒業後も持ち続けてほしいと思います。

　你們好（中国語で「こんにちは」）！　ドライフルーツ班です。私たちが参加する台湾研修までもう２週間を切りました。私たちはフードウェイストの削減を目指してドライフルーツを活用した商品開発を行っているのですが、その一環として、今日はクリスマスのお菓子、「シュトーレン」作りに挑戦しました。

　今回使用したものは、温州みかん、きんかん、ミニトマト、柿、さつまいも、オリーブの６種類の天草産の天草産のドライフルーツ（＆ベジタブル）、それにりんごとバナナをドライフルーツにしたものです。（ちなみに、オリーブは先日、本渡南小からいただいたものです！）他にも、果実を漬け込むのに熊本でお正月に飲まれる「赤酒」を使用したり、天草産の黒砂糖を混ぜ込んだり、少しずつ材料を変えた５種類を試作しました。

　シュトーレンは、作るのはそう難しくはないのですが、発酵が何回も必要だったり、様々な材料を１つ１つ混ぜ込まなければならなかったりと、思ったより手間がかかります。実際に作ってみて、市販品の値段が張る理由が分かるような気がしました。３人がかりで仕込んだ５つのシュトーレン。焼き始めるとすぐにケーキとドライフルーツの「幸せな」香りが調理室いっぱいに広がります。完成を待つ間に、科学部のみなさんにも声をかけて、市販のシュトーレンと「オリーブ茶」を試食＆試飲してみました。オリーブ茶は、摘み取ったオリーブの葉をオリーブ園のレシピを基に加工してみたものです。初めて飲んでみましたが、マイルドな薬草茶のような味がします。シュトーレンはレーズン、オレンジ、レモンが使われているベーシックなものでしたが、シナモンが効いていてとても美味しかったです。スパイス好きにはたまりません！

　焼きあがったシュトーレンにはバターをたっぷり塗り、砂糖をまぶします。２、３日すると味がなじんでくるそうなので、それまでガマン、ガマン。地元のフルーツをたっぷり使ったシュトーレン。どんな味がするのかとても楽しみです！

    Ni men Hao (“Hello” in Chinese)! It’s us, the group ”Dried Fruits” again! No less than two weeks away from our study tour in Taiwan - we’re so excited!  We have been developing products using dried fruits, aiming to reduce food waste, and today we tried making "Stollen," a German Christmas Fruit Bread.

　We used six kinds of dried fruits (& vegetables) from Amakusa: mandarin oranges, kumquats, tomatoes, persimmons, sweet potatoes, and olives, as well as home-made dried apples and bananas.  We also tried "Red sake," which is drunk at New Year's in Kumamoto and brown sugar from Amakusa.

　It took us longer than we had expected, mixing many ingredients and fermenting the dough many times.  We now understand why commercial products are so expensive. As soon as we started baking, the "Happy" aroma of cake and dried fruits filled the cooking room. While waiting for the baking to finish, we tried some stollen we bought and home-made olive tea, inviting some Science Club students and teachers. Olive tea, made from picked olive leaves, tasted like a mild herbal tea. The stollen we tried was a basic one with raisins, oranges, and lemons, which was very tasty with cinnamon. It is a must for spice lovers!

　After baking, the stollen was spread generously with butter and sprinkled with sugar.  It takes a few days to make it even more delicious, so we have to wait until Wednesday at the earliest. The stollen made with lots of local fruit - we can't wait to see how they taste!

　12月といえばクリスマス！　今日のASでは、ずっと欲しかったおもちゃ、ならぬ実験道具を手に入れてウキウキしている班がたくさんありました。汽水域班は塩分濃度計をついにゲット！　これで汽水域がはっきり分かりますね。早速ウェーダーを身につけていつもの川へレッツゴー！　ヘドロを発見してはしゃぐJK。これも青春ですね。

　「走る」班が手に入れたのは「AI骨格検出システム」。こちらはかなり本格的です。動画の３D解析ができるツールらしく、英文の説明書もお手のもの！　早速パソコンにつないで、運動場で走ったときの体の動きを解析していました。実に楽しそうにしています！　その頃、「音」班もやっとベニア板（T2ラワン合板というらしいです。さて、ラワンとは？）を手に入れ、どれくらい防音できるかを調べるための小さな「部屋」づくりに勤しんでいます。やっと「インスタ映え」する写真が撮れました！！

　23日のKSHでは、各班ポスター発表を行うことになっていますが、班によっては１人での発表となる班も...　久しぶりにお越しいただいた崇城大学の田丸先生には、「ポスターの分かりづらいところを指摘し合い、より分かりやすいポスターで伝わる発表を目指す」ようご助言をいただきました。（また、継続している質疑応答練習についてもお褒めいただきました。ありがとうございます！）

　今日で２学期のASⅡは終わりです。来週は修学旅行、その次は修学旅行の代休、そしてあっという間に終業式がやってきます。23日の発表会では、大人数の中で初めて会う人にも研究内容を伝えられるでしょうか。また、それが終わると28日のサイエンスアカデミー（小中学校の生徒にサイエンスの楽しさを伝えます）。更に更に、１月の研修では全班英語でのプレゼンが予定されています。忙しい冬になりそうですね。みんながんばって！

     It’s December - that means Christmas is coming VERY soon!　Today there were many groups who were excited to get a toy from Santa. Well, actually what they got were experimental tools that they had long wanted. The group “Brackish water” finally got a salinity meter they dreamed of! Wearing waders, they went to the river excitedly.

　The group "Running" got the "AI Skeleton Detection System.” It seems to be a tool that can perform 3D analysis of videos. The students set it up and started analyzing their body movements they had shot. They really seemed to be enjoying themselves!

　Meanwhile, the"Sound" group finally got their hands on a veneer board (called T2 Lauan Plywood. What is “Lauan” by the way?)  They were working on building a small "room" to see how well it can be soundproofed. While the boys were quietly making posters for their presentations on the computer, the girls were assembling the boards with hammers in their hands. Finally, we could take some "instagrammable" photos of this group!

　At the KSH presentation on the 23rd, each group will have a poster presentation.  Dr. Tamaru of Sojo University came to today’s classes and gave some advice on making good and easy-to-understand posters. (He also complimented us on our ongoing Q&A practice. Thank you!)

　Today is the last ASII in this term. We will have a closing ceremony in about two weeks, but they have presentations and “Science Academy (Science Day with Elementary and Junior High Students)” during the winter holiday. It is going to be a busy winter. Good luck everyone!

　再来週の本評価を控えた２年生、今日のATⅠでは実験やアンケートの結果を分析している班が多かったようです。その中で困っていた ある班を発見しました。天草特産のみかんを活かした特産品を開発すべく、先日試作品の調理を行ったものの、本評価で示せる数値データがありません。調理の際、数値を取らなかったのか尋ねてみたところ、「バタバタして記録を取っていません」とのこと...。

　仮説の検証を常に頭において研究を進めていくことは、簡単そうで実は結構難しいのだと感じます。仮説の検証につながる信頼できるデータを確実にとっていくには、しっかりとグループ内でのディスカッションを行い、情報を共有することが必要です。その上で、班員でやるべきことを分担して計画的かつ論理的に研究を進めていかねばなりません。さて、各班、本評価までに結果を出せるのでしょうか。みんな頑張って！

　今日は久しぶりに熊本大学と天草市役所から先生方が来られ、地域と関わる研究をしている各班に研究の助言をいただきました。また、次の実験に向けて器具を準備している班もありました（オリーブかすから化粧水に使うスクワランという成分を抽出するそうです）。ディスカッションや活動を重ね、それぞれの研究が少しずつ、少しずつ進んでいます。

　　In ATⅠ today, students are preparing for their evaluation coming in two weeks. We had some advisors from Kumamoto University and Amakusa City come and give advice. Meanwhile, a group was preparing equipment for their next experiment (they are trying to extract a component called squalane from olive pomace). Many others are analyzing the results of their experiments and surveys. 

　　There we found one group in trouble. They have been developing a new product utilizing locally grown oranges, and they cooked some pies the other day.  They enjoyed their cooking and it looked like a success.  But now they have a problem - no numerical data to show in the evaluation. They say they were too busy to keep a record when cooking...

　　It looks like students sometimes forget the fact that they must verify the hypotheses. It is essential to keep discussing in groups and to share the same goal.  No matter what research they do, every single group needs to obtain reliable data to verify the hypothesis.  Well, there should be a way.  Never give up! Gambatte!!
