明日からSSH研修に出発する１、２年生の生徒たち。放課後の地学室で、英語プレゼンテーションのリハーサルを行いました。ALTの先生方を始め、英語科の先生方や科学部員のみなさんに見守られ、３班とも少々緊張しながらしっかりがんばりました。質疑応答はこれまでなかなか練習できておらず、不安もあったのですが、聞き直したりするなどして何とか自分の言葉で答えることもできました。

　いよいよ明朝、熊本から台湾に飛び立ちます。自信をもって、３日間、天草高校の代表としてしっかり学んできます！ 

   Four students will be leaving for the SSH training program tomorrow. All looked a little nervous but did their best in their English presentation rehearsal in the Earth Science Room after school. ALTs, English teachers, and members of the science club were listening to them and helped them a lot. Students were worried about the Q&A session because they hadn’t had enough practice, but they managed to answer the questions in their own words.

　Finally, tomorrow morning, they will fly from Kumamoto to Taiwan. We’re sure this will be a great learning opportunity for them all, and we hope they can do their best with confidence. Gambatte!

　早いもので、あと１週間で台湾研修に出発となりました。そんな中、放課後の職員室に現れたのは、オリーブ班の２人です。昨日練習した英語のプレゼンについての質問...と思いきや、彼女らが会いにきたのは岩間先生（実は、先生は上海への留学経験があり、しかも、中国語の教員免許もお持ちなのです）！　早速、職員室の前の廊下で「中国語教室」が始まりました。

　「私たちは天草高校の１年生です。（我们是天草高中一年級的学生。）」日本語とも、英語とも異なる中国語の発音や文法に興味津々の２人。楽しそうに何度も発音を練習し、最後には「お手本」を録音していただいて、「がんばります！」と笑顔で帰っていきました。

　教えていただいた挨拶が台湾のみなさんにバッチリ伝わるといいですね。加油！！

    In just one week we (four students and two teachers) will be leaving for our Study tour in Taiwan. After school today, two members of the ”Olive Group” suddenly knocked on the teachers’ room. We thought maybe they wanted to ask questions about the English presentation they practiced yesterday... but it was Mr. Iwama, a Japanese language teacher, whom they wanted to meet. (He has experience studying abroad in Shanghai, and has a teaching license in Chinese!) A “Chinese class” began immediately in the hallway in front of the teachers’ room. 

　We are first-year students at Amakusa High School. (我们是天草高中一年級的学生.)” The two students were curious about Chinese pronunciation and grammar, which are quite different from those of Japanese and English. They enjoyed practicing their pronunciation over and over again, and eventually, they happily left with a “model reading” recorded on their smartphone. 

　We hope that the greetings they taught us will be understood perfectly by the Taiwanese people. Thank you very much!

　放課後、英語の話し声が４階のES部室...ではなく、理科棟２階の地学室から聞こえてきました。「なんだろう？」と覗いてみると、そこにはSSH台湾研修に参加する１、２年生の姿がありました。今日は、「オリーブ班」と「教師班」の２班がALTのZoe先生、Jennifer先生とプレゼンの練習をしているようです。

　通常、科学部の活動場所となっている地学室に「間借り」する形で課題研究を行っている台湾研修参加者たち。いつもと違うメンバー＆違う活動にもかかわらず、自然に、そして温かく受け入れてくれる懐の深さもまた、科学部のみなさんの素敵なところです。

　今日の練習では、専門用語の発音の仕方や実験方法の説明の仕方、発表でのジェスチャーなど、１つ１つ、丁寧に指導していただき、２班とも、ちょっと自信がついた様子で地学室をあとにしました。（ちなみにその後、もう１つの研修参加班である「クラゲ班」も英語の熱血（？）指導を受け、遅くまでがんばっていました！）

　 After school, we could hear some English conversation coming from the Earth Science room on the second floor of the Science building. What is it?” Peeking in, we found some SSH Taiwan Study Tour participants. They are practicing presentations with Zoe and Jennifer, who are both assistant language teachers (we call them "ALTs”).

　During today's practice, they checked the pronunciations of technical terms and learned some important skills for the presentation.  We hope they will do their best in Taiwan!

　スンガイ・ブローの動植物に別れを告げ、私たちは帰路につきました。シンガポールの玄関口、シンガポール・チャンギ国際空港は世界中の空港利用者からの投票による「世界の空港トップ10」でアジア１位、世界２位に選ばれている空港です。入国日は通過しただけでしたが、何と言っても今日は出発便まで待ち時間が何時間もあり、これを利用しない手はありません！　二手に分かれて夕食をとった後（カレーor牛丼でした）、みんな揃って空港内の「ジュエル・チャンギ」に向かいます。ここはアート、建築、自然が1つの建造物に集約された構造になっており、熱帯植物や2,000本を超える樹木が囲む高さ40メートルの滝はかなりの存在感です。「緑の都市」として知られるシンガポールの環境保護に対する姿勢を空港内でも感じることができました。滝をライトアップして行われる光と音のショーを見た後は、滝を間近で見ることができるスカイ・トレインにも乗ってみました。これは、ターミナル間の移動に使われている、数分おきに運行されている列車です。空港使用料に含まれているといえばそれまでですが、ジュエルチャンギの散策やショー、スカイトレインの利用も全て無料になっています。他にも、この空港には巨大滑り台やアスレチック、映画館やプールまであるとのこと、是非いつの日か行ってみたいものです！

　さて、福岡行きのフライトが近づいてくる頃には、みんなかなり眠そうです。それもそのはず、日本時間では午前2時20分です…　何とか飛行機に乗り込み、暗くなるとみんなあっという間に眠りについたようです。福岡空港に着くと、みんな慣れた樣子で入国審査を済ませ、天草に向かいます。飛行機が少し遅れたこともあり、台風接近もあり、色々と心配していましたが、新幹線からバスに乗り換え、予定の13時頃には無事天草高校に帰ってくることができました。

　学校到着後、校長先生より、「研修の学びを今後につなげていって欲しい」とのお言葉をいただき、それぞれの帰路につきました。きっと、シンガポールでの貴重な経験や研修での学び、様々な発見など、各家庭で思い出話は尽きないのではないかと思います。天草高校としては初めての実施となった今回のSSHシンガポール海外研修。研修内容の決定や移動手段の確保、事前の学習会や物心両面でのサポートなど、国内外で多くの方にご支援をいただき、無事全日程を終えることができました。これから、研修での学びを生徒自身が今後に活かしていくことはもちろん、研修成果を授業内外で波及させ、探究活動を学校全体で更に充実させていきたいと思います。この度の天草高校SSHシンガポール海外研修に際し、ご支援いただいた皆様にこの場をお借りして心より感謝申し上げます。今後ともどうぞ宜しくお願い申し上げます。

　We bid farewell to Sungai Buloh and headed home. Singapore Changi International Airport, the gateway to Singapore, is ranked first in Asia and second in the world in the “Top 10 Airports in the World.” After splitting up for dinner, we all headed to “Jewel Changi” together. The structure combines art, architecture, and nature in one structure, and the 40-meter-high indoor waterfall surrounded by tropical plants and over 2,000 trees is quite a sight. 　

    By the time our flight to Fukuoka was approaching, everyone was getting quite sleepy. It was 2:20 a.m. Japan time... We managed to board the plane, and when it got dark, everyone fell asleep in no time. The plane was a little delayed and there was a typhoon approaching, so we were worried about many things, but we were able to return to Amakusa High School safely at around 1:00 p.m. as scheduled.

　Thanks to the support of many people in Japan and abroad, we were able to successfully complete the entire program. We hope that the students themselves will make use of what they have learned during the training, and we will also spread the results of the training both inside and outside the classroom to further enhance the exploration activities of the school as a whole. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to everyone who supported us on this tour.

　SSHシンガポール研修の最後を飾るのは、スンガイ・ブロー湿地保護区での実習です。シンガポール政府観光局のウェブサイトによると、この87ヘクタールに広がる観光保護区は、1989年に政府から自然公園の指定を受け、国際的にもその重要性が認められている場所です。オーストラリアに向かう多くの渡り鳥の中継地点になっており、マングローブが生い茂る公園内にはミズオオトカゲやテッポウウオなど、多くの多様な生物が生息しています。

　にぎやかな鳥とセミの声に迎えられて中に入ります。保護区というだけあって、観察のための通路や小さな小屋、コースの案内板や生物の説明など、きれいに整備されています。観察中も工事の方が通路の補修をされており、休憩所の自動販売機では水と一緒にレインコートや虫除けを販売しているなど、環境保護と同時に市民の環境教育に力を入れているという印象を持ちました（ちなみに、入場料は無料です！）。

　保護区に入るとすぐに私たちを迎えてくれたのは、一匹のカワウソ！　仲間を探しているのか、辺りをキョロキョロ見回しながら、通路を私たちの方に走ってきました。驚かさないよう、じっと見守ります。その後観察を続けると、木にくっついている一見貝のような「望遠鏡カタツムリ」、まだ赤ちゃんサイズの「ミズオオトカゲ」、サヨリにも似ている「ブッフォンズリバーガーフィッシュ」、絵本から抜け出してきたような可愛い「オオバコリス」など、様々な生物に出会えます。（若干水位が高く、ワニとの出会いは果たせませんでした…残念！）渡り鳥の季節には少し早いとのことですが、小さめの渡り鳥の集団が羽を休めている姿も見ることができました。

　今日は雨が降ったり止んだり、たまに青空も見えるという、とてもシンガポールらしい天気の一日でしたが、それでも屋外での活動のときは必ず雨が止んでくれました。無事全ての研修を終え、スーツケースに思い出をいっぱい詰めて、これからチャンギ国際空港に向かいます。

　The final part of our study tour is a field trip to the Sungai Buloh Wetlands Reserve. According to the Singapore Tourism Board website, this 87-hectare tourist reserve was designated a Nature Park by the government in 1989 and is internationally recognized for its importance. It is a stopover for many migratory birds on their way to Australia, and the mangrove-lined park is home to a wide variety of species, including the water monitor and the tanager.

  We were first welcomed by the sound of lively birds and cicadas. As a protected area, the park is well maintained with pathways for observation, small huts, information boards on the trails, and explanations of the creatures. While we were observing, some construction workers were repairing the pathways, and vending machines at the rest area were selling raincoats and insect repellents along with water, giving us the impression that the park is making efforts to protect the environment as well as educate citizens about the environment. Above all, the admission fee is free!

　As we walked further, suddenly came a lone otter! It came running down the aisle toward us, looking around as if he were looking for a mate. We watched him closely so as not to startle him. We continued our observation and came across a variety of creatures, including a “Telescope snail” that looked like a shell attached to a tree, a baby-sized “Water monitor,” and a “Buffon's river garfish” that looked like a Japanese anchovy, or "Plantain squirrel" that was as cute as a stuffed animal! Although it was a little early in the season for migratory birds, we also saw a small group of migratory birds resting their wings. It was a pity that we couldn't meet the crocodile as the water level was slightly high, still, we had a very valuable learning opportunity there.
　It rained on and off today, with occasional blue skies, but luckily, it always stopped raining during outdoor activities. Now we're heading for Changi International Airport.
