来月、科学の甲子園の県予選が行われます。

本日は本校2年生から選抜された精鋭生徒6名が実技試験について議論を重ねていました。

高得点を目指して頑張って欲しいです。

　暑くも寒くもなく、今日も秋空の過ごしやすい天気！　今日は「精油班」の第１回実験におじゃましました。精油のストレス緩和効果についての実験で、今日は４名（２名×２回）の被験者で実験をしていました。まず、ストレス負荷をかけるために、被験者は隣り合った数字の足し算を一定時間行います。インターバルをはさんでもう一度計算、その後、精油を嗅いでリラックスできたかどうかを調べるようです。今日はALTのWilliam先生にも実験に参加してもらいました。ストレス度合いは、被験者が指に装着したパルスオキシメーターで計測したデータ分析を試みるとのこと。結果が楽しみですね！（でも、久々の暗算でストレスがすごくたまりました...！by 被験者K） 

　さて、その頃「マイハギ班」の生徒たちは揃って困った顔をしていました。というのも、先日、あるテレビ番組でマイハギが特集されたことにより、全国の園芸店でマイハギが売り切れたんだとか！さて、マイハギ班はこのピンチをどう乗り越えるのでしょうか。

　他の班ももちろん元気にやっています。アマモの水槽から分析のために土を採取したり、走るときの腕の動きについて考えたり、テトラポットを組んだり、汽水域の水の採取に適した潮汐について話し合ったり。それぞれ少しずつ研究が動き出しています。今後にご期待ください！

　Another lovely autumn day!  Today we were invited to the “Essential Oil” group as participants of their 1st experiment.  They have been studying about the relaxing effect of essential oil, and today, they had us undergo stress, then observed how relaxed we would feel after smelling the oil.  In the experiment, we were asked to continuously add pairs of numbers while wearing a pulse oximeter on our finger (it was so stressful!), then, after 15 minutes or so, we were then asked to smell the extract of hinoki, or a Japanese cypress.  Well, it was a good smell, but we’ll see the results later!

   Meanwhile, students in “Telegram Plant” had troubled faces. That’s because of the fact that telegram plants were on TV the other day, so their nursery trees were sold out at every garden store. Without the plants, what would the students do now?

   Of course, other groups are also doing great.  They are taking some soil out of the eelgrass water tank, discussing the movement of arms in running, building up tetrapods, or deciding the best time of tide to take water from the river for checking.  Each research has been moving on little by little.  Stay tuned for updates!

2学期当初から作成を進めていた研究論文が完成しました。

作成を通じて、自分たちの研究に対して考察が深まったようです。

これらの論文は日本学生科学賞に出品します。

入選するかはわかりませんが、結果を待ちたいと思います。

　２年生の各教室と理科室を主な活動場所にしているATⅠですが、実は、毎週ATⅠとATⅡが同じ教室内で活動している部屋が１つだけあります。そう、地学室です！最近の地学室では、ATⅡ（３年生）の班が研究のまとめである「提言書」の作成を行っているすぐ横で、ATⅠ（２年生）が研究の土台である「研究計画書」を練り直しているという状態です。「１年後にどういった活動をしているのか」というビジョンが持てるという点で、２年生にとって学びの多い、恵まれた環境であるといえそうです。

　さて、本日のATⅠでは12月に実施されるSSH台湾海外研修についての説明があり、その後、グループに分かれて各教室で研究計画書の仕上げを行いました。研究の背景に先行研究で調べたことがうまく入っていなかったり、検証が困難な仮説だったり... 一見仕上がっているようでも、細かく見ていくとまだまだ課題の残る計画書も多いです。SSH中間発表会まであと１週間。限られた時間で、計画書の練り直しだけではなく、発表練習も行わなければなりません。日々忙しい２年生ですが、去年度の研究を通した学びも活かして、より良い発表ができますように。また、発表や質疑応答を通して１年生とも学び合える、充実した発表会になりますように。あと１週間、班長を中心に協力して頑張ってくれると信じています。

　In ATⅠ, students go to many different classrooms to meet in groups. However, there is only one room in which both 2nd and 3rd graders meet in the same period - the Earth Science room.  2nd graders can envision what they will be doing in the future through seeing what their seniors are doing now: writing proposals to Amakusa city with their research results.  The result? A unique atmosphere that could help younger students a lot!

  In today’s class, students listened to an explanation about the Taiwan Study Tour in December, and then went to each classroom to complete their study plans in groups.   At first glance, all the study plans look well, but actually, most of them need revision- some don’t include what they learned from previous research, and others have hypotheses which seem almost impossible to be verified in a year.   Now that they have a week to go before the “SSH Interim Presentation” on the 24th, they need to not only complete their study plans, but also prepare and practice their presentations.  Well, we know how busy they are, but we believe they can.  They should be able to use their research experiences last year and make the best use of this presentation opportunity with 1st graders.  Go for it, our young researchers!

　本日６、７限の時間でASⅠ、ATⅠのSSH中間発表会が行われました。５分の発表と３分の質疑応答が５回のセッションで行われ、１年生は２回、２年生は１回の発表をそれぞれ行いました。今日の発表会では質疑応答が活発に行われており、どの生徒も主体的に発表に臨んでいたようです。昨年度の形態から変更し、今回の発表会では２年生も発表を聞くだけではなく研究計画書を発表する時間を取りました。準備期間が短く直前まで発表に不安を抱えていた生徒も多くいましたが、計画書について発表し、質問や助言をいただく機会を得たことは、今後の研究の糧になるものと思います。

　半面、課題もまだまだ多く見受けられました。発表に慣れておらず、声が小さくて聞き取りづらかったり、原稿を読んで発表していたりした班も多くありました。また、質疑応答で何とか返答していたものの、データに基づかない主観で答えていた場面や、答えにつまっていた場面もありました。班によっては、これからディスカッションを重ね、仮説の検証の仕方を見直すことも必要になりそうです。

　最後に、教頭先生から講評をいただきました。研究の質を高めるためにも質疑応答を大切にしてほしいことや、データの質と量にこだわり、どのような数値が必要なのかをしっかり考えてデータをとっていってほしいということなどを話されました。今回の発表会の経験を今後の研究や発表に活かし、計画的に研究を進めていって欲しいと思います。

　Today we had SSH Interim Presentations with students taking ASⅠ and ATⅠ.  We had five sessions in total, each consisting of a 5-minute presentation and a 3-minute question and answer session.  In today’s presentations, so many students asked questions during the session, which indicated great progress.  We had this event last year too, but 2nd graders participated just as listeners that time.  This year, both 1st and 2nd graders had opportunities to present.  This experience will surely help them a lot when they plan and discuss their study in the future.

   Meanwhile, we could see the students were struggling at some points.  Some didn’t speak loud enough, or just read their notes with their faces down.  Others tried to answer questions but ended up revealing they had no reliable data to support their answers.  It seems that many groups need more discussions to find out how they can verify their hypothesis. 

   After all the presentations, the vice-president had a word to students.  He encouraged them to keep asking good questions because that would help make the research better.  Also, he emphasized the quality and quantity of the data; students need to consider what data they take so that they can make their research more reliable.  We hope today’s presentations gave them wider perspectives that can help them in the future.
