School Promotion Video Project! Vol.3

At the beginning of English classes today, we had a little award ceremony.  This is to acknowledge those who were chosen to be representatives for the promotion video making project in each class.  William-sensei gave each winner a “medal” (made with some sweets as you can see). Every winner looked a little shy but proud of the award. Some students even kept wearing their medals during the class!

The winning groups need to do some editing on the video, and we will add narrations by volunteer students. In April, hopefully we can “release” the completed video, which means the all five videos together with some narrations to connect them. It will surely be a very unique and fascinating video! We can’t wait to watch it soon!

School Promotion Video Project! - Vol.2

Today in English Communication II, we watched the finished promotion videos in class. Although all the videos in the class were created on the same theme, each came out very unique. Listening to other groups, students learned things like good use of charts and diagrams, or creative use of subtitles. We teachers were also surprised at how stylish and cool the videos were. The young are talented in using digital devices indeed!

After watching the videos, students looked back on what they have learned through the project. Almost all wrote positive comments, such as  "It was fun," "We were able to cooperate as a group," and "I enjoyed using English.” William the ALT, was very impressed with how each group created a unique video in a short period of time. On the other hand, there are some problems in some videos; there were some subtitles spelled incorrectly, and some were hard to hear as the volume and quality of the narration needed improvement.

Through this project, we were able to see the students shine. Students who are not confident in English were smiling while making narrations. Also, there were many other “video editing masters” who looked happy lecturing the others. It was a wonderful project in which we recognized each other's strengths!

Now, we’re sure our students are feeling relieved after completing the hard work. Well done, everyone! Please wait until Monday next week to see which group will be the class representative!

School Promotion Video Project!

In English Communication II class, students are working on the "School Promotion Video” project this month. They have been working hard to make a school introduction video in English for people overseas to watch. Each class is working on a different part of the video, and the themes of each group are as follows:

   Class 1: Classes

   Class 2: Club Activities

   Class 3: Extracurricular Activities

   Class 4: Events

   Class 5: Facilities

The submission deadline is this Thursday & Friday.  As you can see in the pictures above, the students are exchanging ideas on which scenes to use and how to narrate them. Some students even went outside to record - actually it was such a beautiful day and it was so relaxing in the courtyard!  All the groups seem to be enjoying themselves a lot. Once they’re done, the best video of each class will be chosen, and “the best five” will be combined to make the “School Promotional Video.” Now, which group will be chosen? We are looking forward to the completion of the video, each full of individuality!

Soap Bubble Experiment!?

In today's “Math-science explorationⅠ” class, the teacher was going to use an interesting experimental tool, which looked very interesting. She started the class with some objects and a bucket of liquid in her hand. Everyone was staring at her with excited faces, wondering what was going to happen.

When the chime rang, models of tetrahedrons and cubes appeared from the bucket, with a question from the teacher: "What will the shape of the bubble-soap films be after dipping each shape in the liquid?" I see, it was the soap bubble solution she had in the bucket!

The students consulted with their classmates and made various predictions. When all the opinions had been expressed, the teacher showed them the answer using the models and walked around the classroom so that everybody could see them. She tried the same experiment using three different models.

Now, here is the main question. Why are the films stretched like that? The students look at each other. Apparently, one of the clues to understanding the reason for this is "stability."  By the way, she explained that the film inside the tetrahedron has the same structure as "methane" (sound familiar?).

After a short discussion, the students were asked to actually calculate the area and angle of the films. Some students brought out their chemistry resource books to get some information. What is the difference between the predicted films and the actual ones? This is truly a "fusion of math and chemistry" class. It was impressive to see everyone having fun while learning seriously.

Performance Test, Start!

Students completed their first round of presentations in classes today. They were allotted 4 minutes for the presentation itself, and 2 minutes for a question and answer session. Students tried their hardest to fill the lengthy time, regaling classmates with fun facts of culture, foods, and travel destinations. And also utilized their brain to the fullest in memorizing their long, well thought out scrips in their entirety.

Us teachers were also looking forward to the fruition of their work, wondering what resulting facts and new things they have come to discover through their research. Some student researched locations even piqued my interest, and ended up as new additions to my travel itinerary! Talk about outsourcing!

As for tomorrow, the remainder of the students will present. Hopefully they can learn from today's presenters, and also have a fun time sharing their work!

William Braxton, Amataka ALT

Performace Test Tomorrow

It feels like Term 3 started not so long ago, but mid-term exams are over and now it’s time for the performance test!  This time, students have been working on their “Country research,” in which they have English presentations on countries around the world.  When they picked a country by a lottery at the end of Term 2, many of them didn’t even know where the country was, or didn’t know how to pronounce the name of the country.  But now, after their research, what interesting facts have they found?

In this performance test, students will have a presentation in their group made up by 8-10 people.  They might feel less nervous talking in groups, compared to presentations in front of everyone in class, but they need to plan their presentations with different aspects.  For example, they need to use their small chromebooks, so they need to make sure everyone in the group can see the slides clearly.  Also, they need to think of their notes since they can’t have digital notes while presenting.  Of course, they need to think how they can make themselves understood in English as well. It sounds simple but it’s not so easy to do that in a second language.

Students were working so hard in class because they know it’s coming very soon - tomorrow.  We’re looking forward to seeing your brilliant presentations tomorrow!

Performance Test - Debate in English

Today we finally started our second performance test: debate.  Students had a practice debate yesterday, but we teachers were still a little worried since many groups weren’t fully ready at that point. Yet, they did so well today, which, in turn, impressed the others!  It’s a shame we cannot tell you the details, as there are still other groups to go - they had such great opinions and attacks!  Not only was each student responsible for their roles, but also they worked together very well in their groups, making good use of the preparation time during their debate.  Also the volunteer moderators did a wonderful job so that the debate could go smoothly.  Everyone did a great job.  We are so proud of you all!

Debate is never easy for us Japanese, who value harmony among people. But even so, students have been practicing debate in their Japanese classes as well. However, the flow is not the same and the English debate, of course, is all in English!  Cooperating with your groupmates to form an opinion, thinking of a practical example, and collecting data to support the arguments, will all be useful in our student's future. To those who finished the performance test, well done.  Thank you all, including the moderators who volunteered and did wonderful work for their classmates.  Those who will have their turn tomorrow or later, good luck!

Debate practice in class

Now that the term-end exams are over, second graders have been practicing debating for our performance test next week. Today, in English Expression classes, we are having our first trial debate, in which we are following the actual debating procedure and going all the way through.

William sensei’s topic today is “Living in the countryside is better than living in a big city.”  Since many students here long for urban lives, the “Disagree” side seems to be finding it rather easy to bring lots of ideas. Many insist on the convenience of transportation, more choices in shopping, and even the chance of meeting celebrities and handsome men!

However, the “Agree” sides are not giving up!  When the “Disagree” side insists ”There are too many insects in the countryside,” the “Agree” side counters, “Children will grow stronger if surrounded by insects.” When another “Disagree” side insists “Bigger cities have much more amusement compared to countryside,” an “Agree” side says, “Too much amusement would spoil people. We can concentrate on studying in a quieter environment.”   Others are making good use of their notes to beat their opponents, while a usually-quiet student shoots a smug face at the opponents, objecting confidently. In the case of really good logical opinions, some students of the opposing side are even clapping their hands in agreement. There were lots of laughs and praises in their debate. Such heated debaters they are!

The actual performance test debate will start on Tuesday next week, and students have been preparing their introductory speeches in groups.  Whether they win or not won’t affect their grades, but everyone surely wants to win, right?  We’re sure you can do it!  Good luck!

A journey of a thousand miles

People spend too much time on their smartphones(人々はスマートフォンを使い過ぎている)”。

When the term-end exams are over, 2nd grader students will have another performance test in English: “debate.”  So, in today’s Logic and Expression class, students had a mini debate for practice.

Their first topic was “People spend too much time on smartphones.”  Students shared their opinions and explained the reasons in Japanese in this practice round.

Now it’s time for English debate!  The topic William sensei prepared was “Kinoko or Takenoko.” (Kinoko stands for a popular mushroom-shaped chocolate snack, and Takenoko is another bamboo-sprout-shaped one)  How excited the students became! They exchanged their opinions in English, changed sides, and did it again, but from the opposing point of view. However, It seems very difficult for them to say totally different opinions from what they said a minute before.

While debating over the two chocolate snacks, students were trying hard to state the differences of their texture.  William-sensei said “Kinoko” has a crispy texture while “Takenoko” is rather crumbly.  Some students were talking about the differences among Japanese onomatopoeia, “sakut,”  “karit,” or “parit,”  which all describe food textures.  They were trying to explain the differences using specific examples, but it was so hard!   Tempura, potato chips, or fried chicken all have “crispy” texture for William-sensei, but we Japanese probably use different onomatopoeia to them all.  It’s so profound….

Anyway, by the time they have the performance test, students will be learning not only stating their opinions, but also how to question and object to their opponents.   There being more than one answer, debating is interesting, yet difficult. It would be another precious learning experience for the students since they need to debate in teams.  A journey of a thousand miles has just begun.  Keep learning!

Sales Pitch Day 1!

Today, in English Communication Classes, students had their first day of sales pitch presentations! In all classes, approximately half of the total number of groups were set to present, leaving time in the beginning of class for any last-minute preparations. We also had a special guest, Sarah Lee, come to see which products she will decide to buy in the near future! And so, the challenge began to see who can best sell their product!

Students did their best, engaging the audience through intriguing questions, funny demonstrations, as well as fascinating explanations. Some incorporated powerpoints, as well as music, into their pitches as well. What was most exciting was the groups’ abundance of creativity. From the “Super Everywhere Umbrella,” which allows one to create an umbrella from thin air, to the Lobster Claw (?), a versatile product that can even help you obtain a girlfriend or boyfriend, the students seemed to have fun with the creative process. One standout group had the audience roaring with laughter, the Nakamura Company Group. To demonstrate their product, they asked for a volunteer from the audience. After having that random audience member join them on stage, they used the product. That student disappeared behind the desk, and lo and behold- turned into Mr. Nakamura himself!

Tomorrow is the 2nd day of presentations, so we are looking forward to seeing what else the students have come up with, and who can win Sarah’s money! What product would you buy?

William Braxton (Amataka ALT)

Sales Pitch

Here at Amataka, students have several English performance tests, such as skits or presentations, every year. Today in English Logic and Expression class, they had an orientation for their first performance test this academic year, the “Sales Pitch.”

In Class 3, students first watched a famous sales pitch video which sells “FLEX TAPE” and learned some techniques such as “hook” or “reasoning.”  After that, they saw another sales pitch by their ALT, William-the-Actor, introducing his product “The Spirit Glasses Ⅱ,” which enables people to see the spirits of people from the past.

Later in class they were divided into groups of four and chose what they needed to sell by randomly drawing numbers. The products they were given were all unique items such as a chopstick rest, a bubble gun, or even a seaglass! In each group, students were putting their heads together and thinking about how to sell their products.

In Class 2 next door, where students were having their second class for the Sales Pitch, our other talented ALT Sarah visited each group and gave them some useful advice. So far, they have developed a product which allows them to read teachers’ minds (especially before exam weeks), as well as another product which helps them make new friends. We teachers are hoping that, through this performance test, students will acquire not only their English and communication skills, but also their creativity or acting skills. Can’t wait for their splendid Sales Pitches after the Golden Week!

Google
