昨日の雨から一転し、今日の水俣はきれいな青空が広がる天気となりました。特別なお客様が水俣高校の生徒に会いに来てくれました。アメリカのスタンフォード大学国際相互文化教育プログラム（SPICE）で多文化教育とアジア系アメリカ人に関する研究をされているゲイリー・ムカイ博士（Dr. Gary Mukai）教授をお迎えし、水俣のエコパークを散策し、水俣病の慰霊の鐘や百閒排水溝について生徒たちが説明をしました。さらに２０世紀初頭と第二次世界大戦中の日系アメリカ人の歴史についても、日系アメリカ人として、自らの家族が経験したお話を含めて生徒たちに話してくださいました。

　Dr.Mukai教授はとても親しみやすい人柄で、生徒たちの質問にも丁寧に笑顔で、時にはジョークも交えながら答えてくださいました。一緒に公園を歩きながら、真面目な話以外にもペットのことや好きなものなど、楽しく話をして過ごすことができました。

　参加した小島さんは、最後にDr.Mukai教授から今やるべきこととして、「失敗を恐れず、まずは挑戦し、失敗から学び、前進し続けることが大事」という言葉がとても印象的だったと話していました。

　ご多忙な滞在期間の中で、水俣高校の生徒に会いに来ていただき本当にありがとうございました。またお会いできる日を心待ちにしています！

After yesterday's rain, today's weather in Minamata turned out to be a beautiful blue sky. Today we had a special visitor come to meet the students of Minamata High School. We welcomed Dr. Gary Mukai, who is the Director of the Stanford Program on International and Cross-Cultural Education (SPICE) at Stanford University in the U.S. We walked around the Minamata Eco Park and the students explained about the Minamata Disease Memorial Bell and the Hyakken Drainage Ditch. He also spoke to the students about the history of Japanese Americans in the early 20th century and during World War II, including stories of his own family's experiences as Japanese Americans.

　Dr. Mukai had a very friendly personality to answer the students' questions politely with a smile and sometimes with jokes. As we walked through the park together, we enjoyed spending time talking about pets, favorite things, and other topics besides serious topics. Ms. Kojima, a participant in the event, said that he was very impressed by Dr. Mukai’s final words about what he should do now: "Don't be afraid to fail. Try first, and learn from your mistakes and continue to move forward.”
