２学期、土壌分析に向けて道なき道を突き進んでいた「耕作放棄地」班。その後、彼ら３人組がどうなったか気になっていた読者の方もきっといらっしゃったことでしょう！

　安心してください。先週に引き続き、土班（＝耕作放棄地班）の仲良しボーイズは、順調に学校の北西方向の土地を開拓（？）しています。さて、彼らの研究で実は一番難しいことの１つが「土を手に入れること」。この研究には耕作地と耕作放棄地の両方からの土の採取が必要なのですが、地主の方の許可を得ようにも、ASⅡの授業時間であるこの平日の時間帯は、どうしてもお留守のところが多いのです...。今日も歩きに歩き、少しだけくじけかけていた時、運命の出会いが！「30年前は田んぼだった」という畑で、タイミングよく、地域のおばさまが立派な大根を収穫していらっしゃるところに遭遇したのです。思い切って声をかけると（実はちょっとシャイな３人です）、快く、３箇所もの土を分けてくださいました。ありがたいことです！

　放課後、科学部のクラスメイトの力も借りつつ、土の分析もバッチリ終えることができました。この調子でしっかりデータを積み上げていくことで、３月の発表会までに見えてくるものがあるはずです。これからも、制服を泥だらけにし、雑草と格闘しながら、耕作放棄地の「開拓」を頑張ってください。応援しています！

　This week, let us show you our “Abandoned Land” group, who analyzes the soil of abandoned land. This week, the boys are trying to find some good soil to the northwest of the school. For research, they need to collect soil from both cultivated and abandoned land, but even if they try to get permission from the landowners, many of them are not at home during our AS II class.... Today, they walked and walked, and when we were about to give up, they had a fateful encounter! In a field that “used to be a rice field 30 years ago,” they found a lady harvesting a beautiful daikon radish, who graciously gave some of the soil from three different places. Thank you!!!

　After school, with the help of my classmates in the science club, they successfully completed the soil analysis. Well done, boys! Please keep up the good work, and we’re sure you’ll find what you have been aiming for. We are rooting for you!

　天草高校では課題研究の発表会を１年に３回設けています。そのうち２回が校外の発表会で、３月の「探究成果発表会」と、７月の「探究成果最終発表会」です。（なお、７月の「最終」は３年生にとって最後であることを示しています。）そして、３月と７月の中間の時期に校内で行うのが、現在２年生（ASⅡ、ATⅠ）が発表準備に勤しんでいる「中間発表会」です。

　今日のASⅡでは、多くの班が発表のためのポスター製作に取り組む一方、「耕作放棄地」班はデータ収集のために、校外に出かけました。発表会までにもう少しデータを集めたいと考えているようです。目星をつけていた１つ目の候補地は、土地の所有者が熊本にお住まいとのことで断念。あきらめずに次の候補にあたってみます。学校から出てしばらく西に行ったところに放棄地らしき土地を見つけた班員たち。隣にある立派なお屋敷に許可をお願いしに行　くことにしました。ドキドキ…　少し緊張しましたが快くOKしてくださり、しかも、４、５年前まで稲を植えていたという情報もいただくことができました。背丈を超えるススキやセイタカアワダチソウが元気よく育っている、まさにお手本のような放棄地で、計測地点までの道のりもちょっとした冒険気分。いやー、これはなかなかの「インスタ映えする」活動になりそうです。

「うわ、蜘蛛の巣やばい！」「バッタがすごい！うわっ、蚊がレベチ」「めっちゃ刺された！早くヒモちょうだい！」「うわ、足が水没した」と、何ともにぎやかな様子で３箇所の計測が終了し、分析用に少し土もいただいて帰ってきました。これもひとえに、快く調査の許可をいただいた、土地の所有者の方のおかげです。AS活動は地域のみなさまに支えられていると改めて感じます。さて、アドベンチャー（？）を終え、無事帰校した「耕作放棄地」班。大量の蚊に刺され、やや疲れも見えたものの、「今日は頑張った！」と充実感でいっぱいの３人でした。中間発表会も期待していますよ！

   Our school holds three presentations of research projects per year. Two of these presentations are held in March and July, outside the school. The other presentation, called the “Interim presentation” is what the second-year students are currently preparing for.

　Today in AS II, while many of the groups were working on posters for their presentations, the “Abandoned Land” group went outside the school to collect more data before the presentation. They went to the first candidate site they had chosen in vain - the owner of the land lives in Kumamoto. They decided not to give up easily, and found a piece of land that looked abandoned after a while. They decided to ask permission from the owner of a house next to and the owner kindly gave them permission. Hooray! The abandoned land was filled with tall grasses which were even taller than their height. Well, this is going to be quite an “instagrammable” activity.

　“The cobwebs! Watch out!” “Grasshoppers, here and there!” “Mosquitoes are biting us!” ”Oh, my feet got wet!’ - they seem to be enjoying themselves a lot. After their little adventure to the abandoned land, the three students returned safely to the school. Although they were bitten so badly by mosquitoes and looked a little tired, they were filled with a sense of fulfillment, saying, “We did our best today!” Well done, students, we are looking forward to seeing their interim presentation too!

　お昼は学食でマクドナルドを食べた生徒たち。昼からは、ASの研究内容に関するプレゼンテーションを行います。なんと、プレゼンテーションの会場は、佐藤先生が予約していただいた講堂。写真で見ていただけるように、大きなスクリーンが３つもある立派な講堂です。こんなスケールの大きい場所でのプレゼン、緊張しない人などいるのでしょうか…！

　さて、いよいよプレゼンです。今日のトップバッターは「AI信号機」班。AI信号機の仕組みや従来の信号機との違い、AI信号機の抱える課題とその解決法の提案などを３人で協力して一生懸命発表しました（もちろん英語です！）。２番目は「海水準」班。珪藻と花粉を使った海水面の上昇予測と、それを利用したハザードマップについて発表しました。最後は「彼岸花」班。彼岸花に含まれる毒を耕作放棄地の除草に活用する方法についての発表です。さて、発表を終えて、３班全てに言えることは…「まだまだ」。うーん、やっぱり英語での発表は難しいものですね。練習をしてはいたものの、いざ英語で発表となると緊張のあまり、言葉につまってしまいます。特に質疑応答に関しては、どうして良いか分からずに固まってしまう場面が多く見られました。また、スライドに関しても、分かりやすくするための工夫が足りないという指摘を受けました。反面、研究の題材が面白いと褒めていただいたり、今後の研究についてとても参考になる助言もいただきました。

　プレゼンの後には、実際の大学の研究施設を巡って、研究紹介や実習が行われました。最初に「めっき」に関する研究紹介が行われました。研究紹介では、研究室の学生が全て作り上げた研究機器（企業が作った研究機器に全く引けを取りません！）の紹介の後、実際にメッキ加工を施したものを紹介してもらいました。加工品は、一部のみ加工されていたり、とても細かいものに加工が為されたいたりと、大学の研究力の高さを感じることが出来ました。電子顕微鏡の実習では、実際に虫の一部を電子顕微鏡で観察しました。普段何気なく見ている虫の体がとても精密な構造をしていることをはっきり確認することが出来ました。生徒たちは、ハイレベルな大学での研究に驚きつつ、興味関心を高めていました。

　夜のミーティングでは、今日の反省と明日挑戦したいことについて各自が意見と決意を述べました。うまくいかなかった部分も多い今日の研修でしたが、自分の課題や準備しておくべきだったこと、また、英語でのプレゼンテーションを効果的に行うために英語力を伸ばすことはもちろん、どんなことを準備すべきだったかに気づけたことは、生徒たちの意識を変え、それが今後の行動につながってくると思います。まずは明日、研修でどれだけ積極的に英語を使えるか、また、研修内容を踏まえてどのような事前準備ができるかです。気がつけばシンガポール滞在も残りわずか。思い残すことがないように、一人ひとり、ベストを尽くしてがんばりましょう！

　The first group to present today was the “AI Traffic Signal” group, who worked hard together to present the mechanism of AI Traffic Signals, the differences between AI Traffic Signals and ordinary Traffic Signals, and the challenges faced by AI Traffic Signals and their proposed solutions (in English, of course!). The second was the “Sea Level” group, which had a presentation on the prediction of sea level rise using diatoms and pollen, and making a hazard map based on the prediction. The last group, the “Cluster Amaryllis” group, presented how to utilize the poison contained in the flowers called Cluster Amaryllis, for weeding abandoned farmlands. Do you want to know how the presentations were? Well, although they had practiced, when it came time to present, they got nervous and confused. Especially in the Q&A session, some groups had difficulty in understanding the questions, and there were many occasions when they froze. It was also pointed out that the presentation slides lacked creativity in making them easy to understand. On the other hand, they were praised for their interesting subject of our research and received some very helpful advice for their future research.

　At the meeting afterwards, students reflected on today's results and expressed their opinions and determination on what they would like to try harder tomorrow. Although there were many aspects of today's activities that did not go well, they realized some important things; what they should have done beforehand, or what they should do to improve their English skills to make their presentations more effective. There is only one day left of our stay in Singapore. Let's each of us do our best so that we will not have any regrets!
